Overcard

The term “overcard” is used to refer to hole cards which are of higher rank than any card on the board.

For example, if you are holding Ace Queen and the flop comes Ten, Eight and Six, you have two overcards to the board.

If you have a strong hand that beats your opponent’s likely holding of top pair, you don’t want an overcard to their pair peel on the next card, since it can kill the action.
