Different Types of Online Poker Variants

When someone asks if you play poker, they generally mean Texas Hold’em. It is of course the poker variation that is played in the World Series of Poker Main Event. However, there are many versions of poker beyond No Limit Hold’em. Some poker players like to stick to one game whilst others play many different poker variants.

Most online poker games can be divided into one of the following categories:

  • Stud Poker – The most common games of this type are Five-card Stud and Seven-card Stud. Players receive both face-down cards and face-up cards, with multiple rounds of betting taking place.
  • Draw Poker – Five-card draw is the most common example of this game. Players receive a full hand, face-down, and may discard and redraw a set number of cards.
  • Community Card Poker – Texas Hold’em and Omaha are the most popular examples. Shared cards are dealt face-up, while each player also receives a certain number of face-down cards. Community cards and cards in the player’s hand are combined to make the best possible poker hand.

Other common poker variants include:

  • Lowball – In games such as Razz, the lowest poker hand wins the pot.
  • High-Low Split – The highest and lowest hands split the pot.
  • Pai Gow Poker – Player and dealer are dealt seven cards. The player must make a five-card hand and a two-card hand. To win, both of the player’s hands must beat the dealer’s hands.

These poker games can sometimes be played in land-based poker rooms. As you’d expect, it’s the more popular poker variants that can most often be be found at online poker rooms. Texas Hold’em and Omaha are the games you’re most likely to find in your favorite online poker site’s lobby, however, don’t let this discourage you from trying out other variations of poker, including mixed games such as HORSE (which allow you to play multiple poker variants at the same time). Just expect to find less tables to join for the less commonly played poker games. Continue reading →

Prop poker players. You may have heard of them from a friend or you may have overheard it from casino managers. If you don’t know what they are, don’t be afraid – they’re players, just like you. Read on and discover what they really are.

A prop player starts or rejuvenates poker games and is essentially, a plant from the casino itself. The number of games a prop poker player plays can range from one to twenty, depending on the mood of the day and the time. In the morning, they start the games and are always required to leave one seat open for players. Sometimes, all the players at a table are prop players. This is especially true in the morning, when there are hardly any players. If players arrive, the props attempt to leave one a time, to offer room for the players. The most notable part of being a prop player is that while they are paid by the hour, often times the players use their own money. Continue reading →

So, the first answer you might feel tempted to give to such a question would be a categoric “No”. Continue reading →

old_poker_gameThe game of poker is thought by many historians to have originated more than ten centuries ago. Most people believe it to be a combination of different games that have involved playing with ranked cards.

Most people believe that poker came from the Chinese around 969 A.D. Legend holds that Emperor Mu-tsuang played “cards” with his wife on the eve of the New Year. California Getting Closer To Offering Legalized Online Poker

California has two potential online poker bills, which if passed, will launch legalized real money online poker in the state. The only U.S. states to have a regulated online poker market is Nevada, Delaware, and New Jersey. Combined these three states have a population of 12 million people. Compare this to California which has a population of 38 million.

Considering the larger group of online poker players in California, it would be reasonable to expect that more operators could be viable as they wouldn’t be faced with the liquidity problems that smaller sites in some of the other states have had to deal with. Continue reading →
