Daniel Negreanu – Poker Player Profile

Daniel_Negreanu_2015_WSOPMEDaniel Negreanu was born on July 26, 1974 in Toronto, Canada. Daniel’s parents immigrated from Romania just before he was born. His father was an electrician, and he passed away in 1996. His mother used to make brown bag lunches for Daniel and his older brother and can be seen on all the poker shows with him.

When Daniel was 16 years old he started playing pool and betting on sports in local pool halls. He began playing poker in private clubs and local charity casinos. Once Daniel started playing poker, he got he got “the bug”, and within two months he was playing serious and doing quite well.

When Daniel turned 21 he moved to Las Vegas, but he quickly found out the game in Vegas wasn’t as easy to beat as the game in Toronto. He went broke a few times before he started to succeed.

Daniel says that he never really set out to become a professional poker player. He stated that one day when he was 22, he just woke up and thought to himself “hey, this is what I’m doing for a living.” At that point he decided to make a serious commitment to play poker.

At age 23, Daniel became the youngest player to win a World Series bracelet by winning the pot-limit tournament in 1998. He now has six World Series bracelets to his name.

Since 1997 Daniel has won more tournaments than any other player, and has won over $32 million in lifetime tournament winnings. He presently sits at the top of Poker’s All-Time Money List, which hardly comes as a surprise as he has been the most dominant poker player over the past decade.

Even though the game has changed a lot since Negreanu took up the game, his professionalism and his poker savvy has kept him at the top of the poker rankings. In 2014, he was inducted into the ‘Poker Hall of Fame’, along with tournament poker director Jack McCelland.

In 2015, the six time World Series of Poker bracelet winner made his deepest run in a Main Event in Las Vegas, busting just before the final table bubble in 11th place. In his own words, “The Main Event has always meant more to me than any event.” His reaction when he busted says it all.

In 2005 he wrote a chapter in Doyle Brunson’s book Super System 2 and began working on two poker strategy books, one was released in 2007 called Hold’em Wisdom for all players and the other is Power Hold’em Strategy, which was released in 2008. His second book introduced to the poker world his small ball poker strategy, which quickly became the new trend. Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu also writes poker articles for Card Player.

Daniel is a huge hockey fan and his favorite team is the Maple Leafs. You will often see him wearing hockey jerseys at the poker table.
