How To Maintain Objectivity Whilst Playing Poker

Maintaining objectivity is one of the hardest things to do when it comes to any sport or hobby where decision making is key. One of the best examples of this can be seen within the game of Chess – the endless possibilities and permutations on the board mean that correctly evaluating a position is absolutely vital when deciding how best to proceed.

The same can certainly be said of poker for example, where an overestimation of one’s position can lead to the undertaking of unnecessary risks and an inevitable loss which can be hard to recover from. Many amateur poker players speak of how much easier they find analyzing other people’s games when away from the board and this proof positive that your own view can be skewed purely due to your own unconscious bias. With this in mind, below are a couple of tips which will hopefully help you to maintain a clear mind while playing at the table. Continue reading →

Basic Card Odds and Probabilities

Getting your head around the basics of probability, especially when it comes to card games, can be a bit tricky if you aren’t already good at Maths. That’s why the good folks at casino.paddypower.com have put together this introductory guide to the basics of working out card odds and probability, particularly as it pertains to Poker and Blackjack (though as long as the deck contains 52 cards, you’ll be seeing the same numbers popping up for all of them).

The infographic gives you a few cool statistics to go with the general information, like the number of unique shuffles possible with a deck of cards. The total number is 80,658,175,170,943,878,571,660,636,856,403,766,975,289,505,440,883,277,824,000,000,000,000. Which doesn’t include the jokers. You get this number by going through 52 factorial, that is 52 multiplied by every number from 1 up to 52. This is contextualised by getting into astrophysics and describing a galaxy full of people with decks of cards shuffling them every 5 seconds or so and only just now repeating since the dawn of time. But what this means is that the odds of getting a deck shuffled the same way is intensely unlikely not, importantly, that it is impossible. Continue reading →
